Classic Horror Movies

Ok, it’s not a classic horror movie, but a movie based on classic horror should count, right? On the topic of Lovecraft inspired movies, I recently watched Cool Air (instant streaming on Netflix) and I thought it was EXCELLENT. I may be alone in this seeing as most reviewers were saying it was just ok. In the world of classic horror movie Halloween costumes, there are few more well known than those based on the classic Universal monsters. Bela Lugosi is best known for the title role in the classic horror movie Dracula.

Classic horror movies are just like most any other classic movie genre. Another thing that must be present in classic horror movies is that it must be groundbreaking or unique in some fashion. Besides, I bet Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Creature and all the other greats of the real classic horror movies would kick the slasher butts of Jason, Freddie and Michael any full moon evening should the ever come face to face.

Film critic and journalist Calum Waddell subjects 18 films to analysis and puts them into historical perspective, whilst discussing the films and their impact with those involved in their production. Curse of Frankenstein (1957): The movie that put Hammer Films on the map, this reimagining of the original Frankenstein, directed by Terence Fisher, makes great use of color photography, and the talents of Peter Cushing (as the Baron) and Christopher Lee (as the Monster). Universal’s horror films continued into the 1940s with The Wolf Man 1941, not the first werewolf film, but certainly the most influential.

When one thinks of classic horror magazines Famous Monsters of Filmland is of course the first to come to mind but there have been so many others that have made a great contribution to the classic horror genre. A chance meeting in a tomb brings Dr. Pretorius and the Monster together; and Pretorius uses the Monster to kidnap Mrs. Frankenstein and blackmail Henry into returning to his castle and continuing his experiments. Mr. Hyde : Similar to him was Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde.
